Step 1: Check out existing translations

Before getting to work, please check out our existing translations. If you have suggestions for improving an existing translation, please let us know at translate [at] clipgrab [dot] org.

Step 2: Getting started

The first requirement for translating ClipGrab is to install Qt Linguist or the Qt SDK on your computer. You can get a standalone version of Qt Linguist from this third-party repository or download the entire Qt SDK from qt.io.
During the installation you may be asked to create a Qt account. This step is not necessary and you can simply skip it.

If you are using a Windows computer and don’t have a program suitable for unpacking tar.gz archive files, you will also need to install a tool like 7-Zip.

Step 3: Obtaining the necessary files

After having installed the Qt SDK, download and unpack the source code package of ClipGrab. You can get the most recent version here.

Step 4: Using Qt Linguist

In order to work on the actual translation, you can now use the Qt Linguist tool which comes with the Qt SDK.

If you want to improve an existing translation, open the file clipgrab_YOUR_LANGUAGE_CODE.ts from the ClipGrab source folder with Qt Linguist. If you are unsure what the code for your language is, you can find a list of all codes here.

If you want to create a new translation, open the file clipgrab_strings.ts instead. Select your language from the dropdown under Target language and click on OK.

After opening the translation file, you will see the main interface of Qt Linguist. Start by selecting a group of strings (»Context«) on the left-hand side of the program and then select a text that requires translation. Enter your translation and hit [Ctrl]+[Return] (or [CMD] + [Return] on a Mac) to confirm your translation.

Completed translations will be marked with a green checkmark. If there is a mismatch between the final punctuation of the original and the translation, a yellow check mark will appear. If that is the case, please make sure that your change is intentional.

Step 5: Crediting your translation

The About window of ClipGrab has a section dedicated to translating the program.
Feel free to add a statement such as The YOUR_LANGUAGE translation was done by YOUR_NAME <name@example.org>

Step 6: Get your translation into ClipGrab!

After having completed your translation, save the translation file and send it to translate [at] clipgrab [dot] org.

Please include your name in the email so we can credit you on our translators site.
If it’s a new translation, please also make sure to give us the native name of your language (i. e. »Deutsch« for German or »日本語« for Japanese) for the language selection menu.
